A TEACHER'S GUIDE
Utilising the book, 'The Four Friends'
‘The Four Friends’ is great for Racial Harmony Day/ Diversity themed lessons. Teachers can read the book aloud to children for lesson introductions or as a Tune-In activity.
Teachers can talk about the different races in Singapore and how the four main characters are of different races; Zhen Le is Chinese, Ethan is Eurasian, Deepti is Indian and Adlyn is Malay.
Reading aloud is more interesting and lively when there is a rhythm to it. The book has rhyming words on every page, creating a rhythm when reading it aloud.
While reading aloud, the educator can use different CROWD prompts to get the children involved. (e.g. Recall prompt: “What snack did Adlyn pack?”)
The book provides a great opportunity for teachers to invite the children to join in the repetitive parts of the story (i.e. “What snack did you pack?”)
To enhance the storytelling/ learning experience, why not let the children taste the real thing! The book talks about Pineapple Tarts, Sugee Cake, Murukku and Kueh. Bring in some Pineapple Tarts, Sugee Cake, Murukku and Kueh for the children to see and taste! This is a wonderful way to make the lesson more interactive, fun and memorable.
Here are some ideas for follow-up activities related to the book.
COLOUR THE SNACKS
Give the children a template with outlines of the snacks found in the book. Have them colour the snacks. This activity helps children develop their fine motor skills.
MATCH THE RHYMING WORDS
The book has many words that rhyme. The educator can choose a rhyming sound and create cards of words that rhyme and do not. Children will have to identify the words that rhyme and match them together.
WHO PACKED THIS SNACK?
Children will have to recall and remember which character in the book brought which snack. This is a fast and straightforward activity. This can be done using pictures, pictures broken up into pieces for children to piece back together, verbally or an activity sheet.
